Berlin

Berlin - 1/10/13

Our first day in Berlin. The hotel, Adina, is fantastic. We have a studio apartment, with bedroom, living room and a kitchenette. Brilliant. This is an Australian company and the connection is evident, artwork is all aboriginal paintings.

Today we took a hop-on-hop-off bus tour of the city. Went around 1.5 times then got of an took a boat on the Spree.
The Gendarmerie - Frederic's Guards lived here

On the Spree

The needle Tower is highest structure in Europe and was built by the DDR

The Royal Stables

The pregnant oyster - Given by the Ameriacns to celebrate
something in Jimmy Carter's time, I gather it fell dow and
had to be re constructed

Huge Park designed in the English fashion

On the right is the Chancellors offices etc and the left seems to be
accommodation for staff. The building on the left is still being built.
Front third is occupied, the centre third is almost finished and the last third
only has the concrete roof built and very recent, formwork is still in place

The Reichstag from the Spree. This was in East Berlin and the wall went
along the water. The seven images commemorate seven people who died
trying to escape at this point by diving into the river.

All that remains of the Royal Palace, a church. The east germans pulled
down the rest to build a People's palace, which has now been removed.
The statue of Frederic the Great built by Frederic  III and finished by Frederic IV.

Building is going on everywhere. There are still areas where the destruction of the bombing in WWII has not been replaced, mostly it seems in the old East Germany.
